The Beauty of Same Day Dental Implants: Are They Best for You?

Dental implants done in a single day? That sounds like a wonderful dream, especially for people who are busy. And we’re happy to say that it’s totally possible, depending on the exact nature of the implant. For many of our patients who live far in Columbus, Dayton, or Cincinnati, this is their best option for dental implants because they only have to make the drive once.

Dr. Puckett offers a revolutionary approach to dental implants that can replace missing or failing teeth in a single day.

Same-Day Dental Implants are Technically More Than One Appointment

Well, technically it’s not one single appointment. The same-day nature of the dental implant is we can place the dental implant on a single day — that’s the best anyone can do. Standard dental implant surgery is done months after the damaged tooth was extracted, giving the area time to heal.

Instead of waiting for 3 to 6 months like traditional dental implants, we immediately place the implant after extraction. This allows the rod to fuse to the bone better. Contaminants are kept out of the tooth socket because of this immediate placement, which aids healing with less risk of infection. It’s kind of like killing two birds with one stone: using your body’s healing process to heal the socket and fuse to the implant at the same time.

The catch is same day implants have more risk for implant movement — and as a result, a higher rate of failure. Traditional dental implant surgeries tend to have a 95% success rate; same day implants are only successful 75% of the time.

Success depends on the dental implant fusing to the bone. Osseointegration is a slow and delicate process. The slightest movement can cause problems. The implants must be placed in a highly stable manner in order to properly fuse.

But the good news is that same day dental implants tend to be more affordable because there is less treatment time, and less time you are required to be at our office in a dental chair.

Not Everyone is Eligible for Same-Day Dental Implants

Same day dental implants are not the best option for everyone. They may not work for patients who have had considerable gum disease. There can also be problems if you have poor health or oral hygiene. Smokers are also not the best candidates. Those who have suffered from autoimmune disease or other serious diseases might not be right for same day dental implants.

Whether or not you can get same-day dental implants comes down to 2 principles:

  1. How able is your body’s healing program?
  2. How healthy is your current jaw bone density and strength?

You might have great jaw health but are immunocompromised. Or you might heal from things really quickly but have jaw damage from facial trauma. The important thing to remember is that if we disappoint you by refusing to do same-day dental implant surgery, it’s for your own good. We want you to be safe and healthy. You can likely still get dental implants, just done on the regular schedule.
