What is a Maxillofacial Surgeon?

A maxillofacial surgeon, otherwise known as an oral surgeon, is a medical specialist that operates on the face and mouth. They treat a wide variety of conditions and injuries that affect the head, neck, mouth, jaw, and face. They address jaw misalignment, oral reconstructive surgery, impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants, and cancers of the head and neck. They are certified to administer all forms of sedation dentistry. They are trained dentists who have an additional four-to-six-year residency period that encompasses surgical study. This includes 2 years to get a medical degree beyond their dental training.
