Impacted wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to emerge or develop normally. The roots of the wisdom teeth are too crowded and become trapped. Partially impacted wisdom teeth emerge so that some of the crown is visible. A fully impacted tooth never breaks through the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth may grow at an angle towards the next tooth or the back of the mouth. They may even grow at a right angle to the surrounding teeth, positioned as if they are lying down. Sometimes wisdom teeth grow straight but never emerge through the gumline. Impacted wisdom teeth can damage other teeth. They are also at a high risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Even if the wisdom teeth never fully emerge, we recommend having them extracted as soon as possible.
