Wisdom tooth extraction is so common, you may think everyone has to have their wisdom teeth out. Actually, some people do not need to have these teeth removed. But most do, because as humans and our diets have evolved, our mouths have gotten smaller. Because most people’s mouths do not have room for wisdom teeth, the teeth come in crooked or only partially. If partially erupted or crooked wisdom teeth are left in the mouth, they can cause a number of problems to other teeth and the gums, so many dentists recommend proactive wisdom tooth removal for most of their patients. The surgery is usually done when a person is under age 25, because it is easier to remove wisdom teeth when the jaw bones are not fully formed. Most of Wilmington Oral Surgery’s wisdom teeth patients–particularly those who follow post-op instructions to the letter–recover well within a few days without any complications.
